Why is buying Indian Lavender Oil from India challenging?

About 90% of the lavender essential oil products in Indian market are considered to be adulterated.

True lavender essential oil competes on the market with products made from lavandin which is a hybrid and produces more volatile components than does true lavender and it doesn't differ in fragrance. The rise in interest for the lavender oil not only in India but around the world has made the adulteration of these ingredients a prevalent issue.

There are several common adulterants that are found in lavender essential oil.

  • Lavandin

  • Essential oils rich in linalool and linalool acetate ( these are oil derived from related species like spike lavender or other botanicals )

  • Terpenes

  • Synthetic version of linalool and linalyl acetate

The most frequently mentioned adulterants is lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia) oil and lavandin is regarded as an acceptable substitute by some international authorities.

Examples of lavender adulteration also include the undeclared addition of other essential oils, or oil fractions rich in the natural chemical compound linalool, such as rectified or acetylated ho wood oil (obtained from a linalool-rich chemotype of camphor, Cinnamomum camphora), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and white camphor oil fractions

How can you avoid it?

Pure lavender oil will have a different smell.

  • Official analytical tests for purity and identity include organoleptic evaluations, physical tests (relative density, refractive index, optical rotation, miscibility in ethanol) and chemical tests (acid value, ester value, and composition by thin-layer chromatography

  • All lavender oils can be characterized and identified by a specific chemical fingerprint. Oils of lavender and lavandin can be discerned from other essential oils using organoleptic methods.

  • Both oils are pale yellow and have a characteristic aroma.
