MINIMALLY PROCESSED: The two word secret to white tea :)

Do you know that there is another type of tea apart from the “Herbal tea” packets thrown at you in the supermarket ? It is called the “The White Tea”. Sounds royal? IT IS.

Since people all over have become more conscious of their lifestyles and have developed a newfound interest to find the best ingredients with the highest impact on their bodies, newer varieties of tea are gaining worldwide popularity.

But Why “The White Tea” and not our classic “Green Tea” ?

White tea has a delicate and mild flavor and is naturally low on caffeine. As is least processed, It has way more antioxidants than green tea. It also has a slight edge in terms of providing better health benefits than green tea and ranges from treating heart diseases to helping to fight cancer but the most popular benefit for which white tea is known is that it is very good for skin.

Applying white tea extract to the skin helps protect against the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays. Polyphenols, which are found in white tea, can suppress several cellular components that may damage the fiber network that helps the skin stay tight and firm and prevent wrinkling.

But is it like a different plant?

White tea, Green tea and Black tea, all come from the same tea plant. They differ in harvest time and the drying process. White tea is closely related to green tea but after the leaves are harvested, they go through a slightly different process. They are only harvested in the spring and the harvest process makes it one of the most expensive tea varieties.

Firstly, for white tea, the plucking process is done before the leaves fully open where the leaves still have this white fine hairs (That's why it is called white tea) which protects the tea plant’s new growth from Insects.

Secondly, these leaves are dried to prevent oxidising. They are left to wilt or fade where the leaves are exposed to air a little more before they get heat roasted.

Wait but why “Indian” white tea ?

White tea from India is more tannic compared to those grown in Yunnan region in China which are smoky and earthy. Indian White tea does not have any particular variety like green tea but is differentiated based on the harvest and different uses.

Types of Indian White tea:

  1. White peony (harvested in end April)

  2. Silver needle (harvested in early April)

  3. Silver needle reserve - (harvested when they first sprout in March in the northeast especially in Arunachal pradesh )

  4. Darjeeling white tea- Specifically grown in darjeeling only and has a different profile.
