The Art of Buying Authentic Indian Rose Oil

Known globally for their classic beauty and timeless fragrance, roses have also been an integral part of the beauty practices of many societies worldwide with parts of India and the Middle East as key examples. India accounts for a significant amount of global exports for rose products like rose essential oil, rose absolutes and rose attars.

India's age old connection with Roses

Indian Rose is as old as we can imagine essence to be. The association of roses with India's history goes back to well over 5000 years as Rose is considered to be Lord Krishna’s favorite flower. Rose, the flower of love, passion, and charm was first distilled into rose essential oil in the ancient perfume capital of the world Kannauj during the Mughal era in the last 400 years. The artisans in kannauj used a traditional hydrolysis method called deg bhapka to obtain the surreal scent of rose in a liquid.

The soil and climatic conditions in India are ideal for generating and growing the best Rosa Damascena plants, which generate exceptional quality Rose essential oil. India's diverse geography allows it to grow many varieties of roses. However, Damask rose, or Rosa damascene is one of the most coveted varieties in the world and is grown exclusively in the Gangetic plains of the Himalayas. Apart from these areas in the state of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, other varieties of Rose are also found in hotter regions of Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Even the odour profile of Indian rose essential oil is unquestionably one of the best in the world.

What is Special about Damask Rose Essential Oil?

Damask rose (Rosa damascena Mill) is a scented rose species widely used for preparing value-added products. What fascinates us most about the Damask rose is that each one is hand-picked at a specific soothing time of day. Harvested from the valleys directly, each flower is gathered early in the morning before it has had a chance to bloom. This ensures each one retains the highest concentration of fragrance and delivers an intense perfume. Rose essential oil is a must ingredient for many industries like cosmetic, perfumery, aromatherapy and personal care.

How Simple is it to Buy Authentic Indian Damask Rose Oil ?

As fascinating as it sounds, We will have to bring you back to the reality of markets in India. When looking to buy rose essential oil, we often find extreme price fluctuations with similar promises of quality. Of course, it is impossible to have these many prices for the same quantity and similar varieties. So how do we ensure we only buy authentic rose oil?

For that, we need to understand various ways of adulterating rose essential oil and ways to avoid it.

Adulteration Technique 1- Guaiac Wood oil is often used in the adulteration of rose oil from Bulgaria and has a pleasant tea-rose-like aroma. But this can be determined.

Avoiding tip: If you can see small crystals (guaiacol crystals) which separate from the oil upon cooling and have a different form than rose essential oil crystals this means the rose essential oil is mixed with guaiac wood oil. Adulteration Technique 2 - Palmarosa and Geranium oil are often used as replacements for Rose essential oil as they have Geraniol content.

Avoiding tip: Getting a GC MS test done for your oil sample and matching it relatively common chemical composition (citronellal 24-64%, geraniol 63-84%, nerol 1-10% , phenylethyl alcohol 0-1%, esters of geraniol 0-3.5%, eugenol 0-1%, stearoptene 7-25%, rose oxide 0.5%, nerol oxide 0.05%, methyl eugenol 2.0%, farnesol1.5%)

Adulteration Technique 3 - Selling Synthetic rose oil in the name of pure rose oil.

Avoiding tip: Check for Iodine as Synthetic rose essential oil will be deodorized (odor will be eliminated) with iodine
